Surviving the Holidays Together

The holidays are normally a time to be thankful and joyous and celebrate with family and friends; however, this is not the case for everyone. With Thanksgiving fast approaching and Christmas right around the corner, the holiday gatherings and the seasonal stress can start to wear on you. The holiday season can also become extremely overwhelming, stressful, and depressing for couples struggling with fertility. Simple things such as holiday cards and Facebook posts of friends and family posing with their perfect families can take an emotional toll. Instead of feeling down this season take this opportunity to be thankful and optimistic by working hand in hand with your partner, and using these few simple yet successful ideas to survive the holidays.

Saying No is perfectly acceptable.
It’s OK to politely decline an invitation to a holiday party or gathering. A simple decline such as, “We would love to attend your party; however, we will be away that weekend,” is perfectly acceptable. You do not need to explain yourself to anyone; it is perfectly OK to do what feels right for you and your partner.

Don’t Stay Too Long
Prior to the event, you and your partner should discuss and agree upon the amount of time that you feel is appropriate to stay. Remember to have fun and chat with fellow guests and family and when your time is up leave graciously. Have a Signal Plan ahead and agree upon a signal to use if either one of you feels that it is time to fly the coop earlier than discussed. This could be a simple gesture that can be seen from a distance such as across the room or a code word, “mistletoe”, and if all else fails send an urgent text message.

Take a Break
Plan a fun getaway or weekend away instead of the dreaded boring holiday family party. Go and have fun doing something you both enjoy whether it is skiing, a weekend in NYC, or just a simple relaxing dinner out. During this time remember to have fun and don’t focus on the negatives. Use this time to let loose and have fun and share time with the one you love the most. Make it memorable!
